Ingenuity in every fibre
of our being.

History

A past like no other.

We pride ourselves in our unique story. The mill was founded in 1947 by the 5th Marquess of Bute with the sole purpose of providing employment opportunities for service people returning home from the Second World War.

Since then we’ve gone from strength to strength, cultivating markets worldwide and consistently pushing the boundaries of innovation. To this day we’re supported by the Bute family and share in their continuing commitment towards the local community.

Island

Closer than you think.

Situated within the Firth of Clyde, Bute is steeped in history. There is an astonishing array of different landscapes: heather-covered moorland, lush rolling hills, wild forests, sweeping beaches and an ever-changing seascape. These ready-made palettes of vibrant colours and textures provide a continual source of inspiration.

It’s so peaceful, you’d be forgiven for thinking we’re a million miles away from it all. In fact, Bute is one of Scotland’s most accessible islands and only 33 miles away from the city of Glasgow. Which means we can dispatch our fabrics to customers all over the world in the blink of an eye.

Bute is not just our muse; it’s the perfect home for our internationally acclaimed business.

Design

Inspired by mother nature.

Whether creating durable fabrics for auditoria or bespoke woollen drapes for a boutique hotel, we work tirelessly to make sure our textiles always enhance an environment.

The island’s natural colours, textures and patterns are woven into our designs making them bold, bright and contemporary.

Our designs go straight from CAD to the handloom. All our textiles are designed and woven to withstand the test of time.

Quality

A fabric you can trust.

We have some of the most technically advanced woollen fabrics in the industry and nothing matters more to us than its quality and performance. All of our textiles go through extensive and rigorous testing in our in-house laboratory. It’s crucial our customers have a durable fabric, especially when it comes to high performance environments.

When matching colours our process is equally as stringent. Every piece of fabric we’ve ever woven is safely archived, so that when we’re comparing colours we’ll only ever refer back to the original master. We’ll even go as far as to check the colours under simulated natural daylight from around the globe. This way we always ensure our colour matching is precise and that our customers can enjoy an outstanding product no matter where they are in the world.

Production

The fibre of our being.

It’s not just our looms that are at the heart of Bute Fabrics: our people are too. It’s their specialist skills and drive that make it possible for us to be leaders in an international marketplace. As a company, we never rest on our laurels, but always look to the future.

With our staff’s energy, enthusiasm and dedication, we’re able to produce some of the world’s most technically advanced woollen textiles.

It’s this perfect combination of machinery and knowledge that ensures we’re the natural choice for fabric solutions and that we always have a product our customers love.
