Bank of Scotland, Glasgow

The recently opened state-of-the-art ‘flagship’ Bank of Scotland branch on Glasgow’s Argyle Street features the product and craftsmanship of many Scottish manufacturers and suppliers, including Bute Fabrics.

Our team were invited to develop a bespoke tartan for the Lloyds Banking Group brand, a design signature that will be implemented across their flagship branches, complemented by a curated selection of fabrics from our stocked fabric collection. One room in particular, the Weaver Room, has been created in reflection of the ‘Bute experience’ which tells the story of the Lloyds Banking Group design team visit to our mill. During their visit, the team were able to see first-hand the development and weaving of the bespoke tartan we created for them.

In creating our new branch design for Bank of Scotland, our aim was to provide an experience that explored the brand essence of what it means to be Scottish. Drawing on craftsmanship and authenticity with elemental inspirations from the landscape to create something completely unique; a brand signature for our flagship stores. By using Scottish suppliers, manufacturers and photographers we have created a contemporary and welcoming environment which showcases the rich heritage of our Bank of Scotland brand.

Bute Fabrics aligned perfectly with the ambition to deliver an authentic Scottish narrative to every element within the design. A design principle that we have employed is the ‘Mark of the Maker’ - demonstrating craftsmanship which in turn reflects the expertise of the Bank of Scotland colleagues.” Lynn Lees, Design Manager

This project marks the third flagship branch to undergo an innovative transformation - Designed to meet the changing needs of high street customers and act as a testing ground for the future of banking in Scotland, the branch will bring together a host of new services, designed to create a very different high street banking experience for both personal and business customers. Offering extended opening hours and feature a coffee shop to provide a warm, informal space for customers and visitors to chat, meet, work and learn.

Tara Foley, Manager Director at Bank of Scotland, said:

“New technology is rapidly changing the way many people choose to do their day to day banking. However, support and guidance from our branch colleagues remains crucial for the big or unexpected moments in our customers’ lives, such as buying a home, having children, or dealing with bereavement. That’s why we’re creating a different kind of bank branch. This will offer the services that we know our customers want in a modern and flexible environment, combining the latest in interactive digital technology with the trusted personal service provided by our expert colleagues.”
